An external CD burner can be plugged into your computer using a USB cable or other external connection. An internal CD burner requires you to open up your computer case for installation. Many new computers have internal CD recorders pre-installed.

3. What's the difference between CD-Rs and CD-RWs?
A CD-R can only be recorded once. You cannot re-record to a CD-R, even if you make a mistake. CD-Rs play in virtually any consumer CD player and on most PC computers. The CD-RW is a rewritable disk. It can be recorded and re-recorded over multiple times, just like a floppy or hard disk.

4. What format are CD recordings from RCN Music files?
Purchased downloads are burned in regular CD audio format. Depending on the type of CD you burn (CD-R versus CD-RW), you can play burned CDs in your PC, home and car stereos, and portable CD players. You can also transfer purchased downloads to play on portable media devices that support the WMA format. However, please note that some popular portable players, such as the iPod, do not support WMA. For an updated list of Players that do support the WMA format, go to the following web site: http://www.playsforsure.com/FindPortableDevices.aspx

5. Do I have to be online to record a CD?
You must be online to purchase a download that can be recorded to CD. However, once purchased, you do not have to be online to record the song to a CD. You can burn the song again later without being connected to the Internet.

8. How many times can I burn the same purchased download?
Each unique list of purchased songs can be burned to CD 7 times. Each song can be on any number of unique burn lists.

9. Can I play a CD I burned with RCN Music songs in my car stereo or other audio system?
Yes, you can play a CD recorded from RCN Music songs on any CD player.

10. If I burn a song to CD, does it also remain on my hard drive?
Yes, the song you burned will still be on your hard drive and will still playable on your computer.

11. Can I burn a song without first downloading it?
No. To burn a song to a CD, you must first purchase and download it.

12. Can I burn a few songs to a CD and then add more to the same CD at a later time?
This depends on the CD recording software that you use to burn to the CD. Most CD recording software "closes" or "finishes" the CD so that it will be playable in regular CD players. If a CD is "closed" you will not be able to record more songs to it. If your software does not "close" the CD, you can add more songs to a previously recorded CD, if it has additional storage space available.

13. Can I burn the same song multiple times?
You can burn permanent downloads as follows: Burning tracks individually:

  • If you are using Windows Media Player 9, you can burn each permanent download up to 5 times.
  • If you are using Windows Media Player 10, you can burn each permanent download as many times as you like.
  • Burning playlists: If you are using Windows Media Player 9, the number of times that you can record a playlist is dependent on the number of times each individual track has been burned previously. Each individual download can only be burned 5 times. As long as each track has not been burned 5 or more times (either individually or as part of a playlist) you will be able to burn the playlist.
  • If you are using Windows Media Player 10, you can burn each unique playlist up to 7 times. To burn a playlist more than 7 times, you will need to change the playlist by adding or removing songs.

14. Why don't all the songs I burned to my CD play?
CD burning is often tricky, depending on your CD burner and its connection to your computer. If you attempt to record a CD with several songs, but not all the songs play from the CD, there could be problems with your CD burn speed setting. Try changing your burn speed setting to "4x" or lower. You might also lose some songs on your CD if you try to copy 80 minutes or more to one CD. Try copying 60 minutes or less to each CD.

15. What if my CD recording does not work?
Successful CD recording can depend on several factors, including: - The software that runs your CD recorder - The speed of your CD recorder - If you have an external CD recorder that connects to your computer through a USB port, you should set the recording speed to 4X by clicking the Settings button on the Microsoft Windows Media Player. If you are having problems with your CD burner, you might also want to check your CD recorder manufacturer's support page.

Section XI. Technical Problems

1. What if there is no sound when I play a song?
Please check the following:

  • Are your speakers connected to your computer and turned on?
  • Is the volume on your speakers turned up?
  • Do you have a sound card?
  • Is your RCN Music or Windows Media Player volume turned up and not muted?
  • Is your computer system volume turned up and not muted?

2. Why was I signed off from my RCN Music account?
You are allowed to use RCN Music on one computer at a time. If you are already signed in and then sign in from another computer, you will automatically be signed out on the first computer.

3. I have RCN Music installed on 3 computers already, but Id like to deactivate one computer and replace it with a new one. How do I do this?
If you've already downloaded from our service on 3 computers, and wish to change to yet another computer, you must first de-authorize one of your current 3 computers before you will be allowed to download on the new computer. To do this click the Subscription tab of My Account. Click the De-Authorize button next to the computer you no longer wish to use. Once that computer is successfully de-authorized, you can start downloading on a new computer. Note: that you may only de-authorize one computer per month in this way. If you want to de-authorize another computer, please contact RCN Customer Support.

4. What if I remove the Windows Media Player software from my computer?
RCN Music player requires that you have Windows Media Player version 9.0 or higher installed on your computer. If you delete the Windows Media Player software, you will be prompted to reinstall it the next time you sign on to RCN Music.

5. Why does my computer slow down periodically while using RCN Music?
RCN Music may periodically pause your computer while it updates your music library. During this update process, the RCN Music player is registering your song licenses. While this update process can take up a large portion of your computer's processing power, it usually only takes a few seconds. You should not restart your computer during this update process.

6. I received an error message saying that my download is missing. What does this mean?
If you receive an error saying that your download is missing, it has either been deleted from your library or it has been moved to a different location. You may re-download the song if it is missing from your library.

7. If I accidentally delete a song from my computer, how do I get it back?
If you delete a song from your computer, you may be able to retrieve it from the Recycle Bin. If you have already emptied it from your Recycle Bin, you can easily re-download that song from RCN Music. Use the search tool to find to the song title. Select the song from the search results, and then click Download.

  • Subscription Downloads can be downloaded as many times as you like on up to 3 computers. Use the search tool to find the song title, select the song from the search results, and then click Download.
  • Permanent downloads (purchased songs) may be downloaded up to 5 times either on the same PC or 2 additional PCs. If you have downloaded the permanent download 5 times, you will need to repurchase it in order to be able to download it again.

8. Why does the "license window" appear sometimes?
Subscription Downloads can only be listened to as long as your subscription is active. The "license window" allows you to enter your username and password so that RCN Music can revalidate your licenses. You may keep your subscription downloads as long as your RCN Music subscription is active. However, the song licenses must be updated at least every 30 days via the Internet. If you try to play a song whose license has expired, you will be prompted to enter your username and password, and the license will immediately be renewed via the Internet. If you use Windows Media Player 10 or higher, renewing any individual song license will automatically update the licenses for all other RCN Music subscription downloads stored on your PC. If you use Windows Media Player 9, each song license must be renewed individually. Permanent downloads (purchased songs) never expire.

9. I attempted to download a song and nothing appeared to happen. However, I see a status message that something is "pending." What does this mean?
"Pending" typically means that another download is in progress and RCN Music is waiting for that download to finish. You may want to scroll down to the bottom of the screen to check whether another download is in fact in progress. If you have confirmed that a song is not currently downloading, and you still see the "pending" message, try closing your browser and then restarting the service.
